Uganda hosts around 1 million South Sudanese refugees. For a project with ZOA, Jilke traveled to one of the biggest refugee camps in Uganda to interview the South Sudanese war survivors. Amongst all the stories by the refugees in Uganda, one we will never forget is the story of Night. After this woman witnessed her brother being killed, Night took her six children and fled to Uganda.

In a small, simple hut in a giant refugee camp, Night tries to survive. Like most of the women here, she doesn’t know where her husband is. She doesn’t even know whether he is still alive or not. Many men stayed behind in South Sudan to fight and to protect their properties. Night will never give up looking for her husband, she told us. “Every time I met newly arrived refugees, I will ask them whether they have news about my husband,” she told us.
The photo stories, written life stories, and video footage were used by ZOA to raise awareness of this refugee crisis in Uganda.
