Stuck in Addis Ababa: Life of refugees with a temporary home

Thousands of refugees and asylum seekers try to find a (temporary) home in Addis Ababa. From neighboring countries, people travel to Addis to search for work or a new life in Ethiopia’s capital. This is often difficult; surviving is hard when you don’t have money. Juney collected the
stories of six people from six different countries.

Out of the many refugees with a temporary home in Addis, we featured Stacey. Stacey arrived in Addis as a young girl. After her father and a brother were killed, Stacey’s mother fled with Stacey and her two brothers to Addis Ababa. For Stacey, life in Addis is hard. Her greatest wish is to go to school. Instead, Stacey runs the household and takes care of her traumatized mother: “When I ask Stacey if she can tell me about a fun memory from her childhood, she stays silent for half a minute. “Do you mean if I had any friends?” She asks desperately. When I give her an
affirmative nod, she shakes her head. “No,” she answers. “My childhood was difficult and painful.” Fortunately, she still has her brothers. “I love them because they are always friendly to me. They are called Francis and Micha. They can go to school and have friends; I like that very much. Every day I wait for them to leave school.”
